TOOTH DECAY IS NOT CAUSING TOOTH LOSS! Report by Dr J Basrai

TOOTH DECAY IS NOT CAUSING TOOTH LOSS

The major cause of tooth loss in adults is not decay - it's periodontal (gum) disease. And it's completely painless right up to an advanced stage. More than half of all the people over age 18 have at least the early stage of periodontal disease. After 35 about three out of four adults are affected.

"People with periodontal disease do not realise it." Explains Dr Jagmail Basrai of Chafford 100 Dental Care at Drake Road, Grays. "If you have bad breath, red gums, loose teeth or bleeding when you brush; there is a good chance you have the problem. The end result, if untreated, is tooth loss or worse." Gum disease has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease!

During regular visits to the dentist and hygienist early signs of gum disease will be identified. You will be taught how to brush and floss so as to prevent the problem occurring. Any condition can be treated painlessly and quickly in a few short appointments.

"If your eye balls bleed you would go to the doctor immediately. When your gums bleed you should go to your dentist." advises Dr Jagmail Basrai.
