Sensitive Teeth in Essex?

How will know if I have sensitive teeth?

If you experience occasional discomfort or pain when
eating or drinking hot or cold food or drinks then you
may have sensitive teeth.

The majority of people who have sensitive teeth do not
experience pain every time that they eat or drink hot
or cold food or drinks. The “unexpected” surprise of the
pain can make having sensitive teeth quite frustrating!

What are the main triggers for pain?

There are a range of triggers that can cause discomfort for people
who have sensitive teeth. The triggers are different for different people.
Common triggers include:
• Cold food and drinks e.g. ice cream, ice lollies
and chilled drinks
• Hot food and drinks e.g. soup, coffee and tea
• Sweet food e.g. sticky toffee pudding, chocolate and sweets
• Brushing teeth especially when followed by rinsing
with cold water
Whatever triggers your pain make sure that you mention it to
us!

Can anyone develop sensitive teeth?
Sensitive teeth are more common than you may think. In the UK over
14 million adults suffer from sensitive teeth. It affects people of all age
groups and can occur at any time.

Sensitive teeth are increasingly affecting younger people as a result of
changes in lifestyle and eating habits. As we consume more acidic food
and drinks and snack more often during the day, we are more at risk of
developing sensitive teeth.

What causes sensitive teeth?
Underneath the protective enamel coating of teeth is a highly porous
layer called dentine. This dentine is made from thousands of microscopic
tubes or tubules. Once dentine is exposed the nerve in the centre of the
tooth becomes susceptible to triggers such as cold food and responds
with a short sharp pain.
Delicate dentine once exposed can be easily worn away by toothbrushing.

Dentine can become exposed through two main routes:
Erosion

Acids in our everyday diet can soften the enamel coating of the
teeth. This enamel is then susceptible to being worn away by
brushing, exposing the dentine. Acidic foods and drinks include fruit
juices, pickles and fizzy drinks such as cola including diet fizzy drinks.

Gum recession
This can be caused by over vigorous toothbrushing, or poor brushing
which can also lead to gum disease. Gum recession leads to the
sensitive dentine in the neck of the tooth becoming exposed.

an sensitive toothpastes be used every day?
Many sensitive toothpaste formulations offer the benefi ts
of everyday toothpastes, such as fl uoride protection and
fresh breath and are designed to be used every day.
Should I use a specialist toothbrush
for sensitive teeth?
To help prevent sensitive teeth it is important to use the
correct toothbrush and brushing technique. SENSODYNE
toothbrushes have compact heads and end rounded bristles
designed to prevent gum irritation.

Gum Disease in Essex?

Gum disease describes swelling, soreness or infection of
the gum tissue. There are two main forms of gum disease:

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the mildest form of gum disease. Your gums
become red and swollen and may also bleed easily when
you brush your teeth. There is usually little or no pain.
With improved oral hygiene this condition is reversible.

Periodontitis

Untreated gingivitis may lead to periodontitis. As plaque
spreads and grows below the gum line the tissues and
bone that support your teeth are broken down by
plaque bacteria and destroyed. Your gums may become
separated from your teeth to form pockets, which can
become infected. Eventually teeth may become loose
and have to be removed. The damage caused by this
condition cannot be reversed. However with improved
oral hygiene and treatment by your dentist or hygienist
the condition may be stabilised.

The main cause of gum disease is dental plaque. Plaque is the sticky
layer that collects on the surface of your teeth and gums and contains
bacteria. This plaque can become hardened and form into a surface
layer of tartar (calculus). The bacteria in the tartar continue to attack
the tissues that support the root of your tooth.
How can I tell if I have gum disease?

If you have gingivitis:

• Your gums will be red in colour rather than the usual healthy pink.
• They will also tend to be slightly puffy or swollen.
• Inflamed gums also bleed, usually when you brush your teeth
or bite into something hard such as an apple.
• In severe cases your gums may bleed of their own accord.
If you think you have any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them,
ask your dentist.

Who can get gum disease?
90% of the population are estimated to suffer at some point in their
life to a greater or lesser degree. Gingivitis can affect anyone of any age,
although it is less likely in younger children. Some groups are more at
risk, such as pregnant women, due to
hormonal changes.

How can I prevent gum disease?
The best way to avoid or alleviate gum disease is to practice
good oral hygiene.
Brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day for at least two minutes.
Use a total care toothpaste, designed to help keeps gums healthy
and containing fluoride to protect against decay.
Use floss or interdental brushes at least once a day to clean
between your teeth and remove plaque, in particular from
around the gum margin.
After brushing, rinse your mouth with a fluoride mouthrinse,
to reach the areas that may be missed by brushing.
How can I treat gum problems if they occur?

We will help treat your gum
problems
by making sure that your teeth are thoroughly clean.

We may recommend treatment using
a chlorhexidine digluconate based mouthwash,
such as CORSOdYl Mint Mouthwash.

CORSOdYl mouthwash contains an antibac-
terial ingredient that attacks and helps kill the
plaque bacteria which are causing your gum
irritation.
In addition, CORSOdYl forms a
coating on your teeth, which lasts for up to 12
hours to help prevent new plaque forming on
your teeth and causing further irritation. Call us on 0137548100 for further information
on treating your gum problems.

Pregnancy and Gum Disease!

Around 50% of all pregnant women experience dental
problems at some point during their pregnancy. The most
common condition is pregnancy gingivitis (gum disease
resulting from pregnancy).

Changing hormone levels can make your gums more
susceptible to plaque attack. Gingivitis causes the gums to
become red and swollen and also bleed easily and they
may also become sore.

The best way to avoid or alleviate the gum problems associated
with pregnancy is to practice good oral hygiene.

Brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day for at least two minutes. Use
a total care toothpaste, which will help keep gums healthy and contains
fluoride to protect against decay.

Use floss or interdental brushes at least once a day to clean in-between
your teeth and remove plaque, in particular from around the gum margin.
Rinse your mouth after brushing with a fluoride mouthrinse, to reach
the areas that may be missed by brushing.

If irritation persists your dentist may recommend treatment
using a chlorhexidine digluconate based mouthrinse, such as
CORsODYL Mint Mouthwash.

CORsODYL mouthwashes contain an antibacterial ingredient that
attacks and kills the plaque bacteria that are causing your gum irritation.
In addition, CORsODYL forms a coating on your teeth, which lasts
for up to 12 hours to prevent new plaque forming on your teeth and
causing further irritation. Ask us for further
information on treating your gum problems.

Childrens Dentist Essex! Childs Dentist Essex!

Plaque will start to form on your child’s teeth and gums as
soon as the first tooth appears. It is important to start a
suitable brushing routine as soon as your child’s teeth start
to appear to help prevent tooth decay and gum problems.
How should I brush my child’s teeth?

The easiest way to brush a young child’s teeth is from
behind, with them sitting on your knee. First gently raise
the chin resting their head against you so that you are
able to look down into their mouth. Then, gently brush
each tooth using circular strokes.

• Use a toothbrush suitable for your child’s age and
stage of tooth development. A small-headed soft
brush should be used initially.

• The use of colourful character toothbrushes
can help to make brushing fun for children.

A balanced diet is vital for any child – plenty of calcium, vitamins
and minerals are important for healthy teeth to form. To ensure
healthy teeth for life it is also important to avoid giving your child
unnecessary sugars.

• Milk and water are the only drinks that should ever be placed in
your baby’s bottle.

• Fizzy drinks (regular or diet), artifi cial fruit squash, drinking chocolate
and milkshakes can all cause harm to teeth. The sugar can lead to
decay, whilst the acid in fi zzy drinks and artifi cial fruit squash can
also attack the enamel covering the teeth (this is called acid erosion).
Limit fi zzy drinks to treats or for special occasions.

• Do not give your child sugary drinks in bottles or dip dummies
in sugary substances as these can cause tooth decay.

• Introduce your baby to a feeding cup as soon as possible.

• Fruit juice should be diluted (1 part juice to 10 parts water),
given in a cup and restricted to mealtimes.

• Avoid cakes, sweets and biscuits between meals. Instead choose
tooth friendly snacks, such as cheese or small pieces of vegetables
such as carrots or celery.

• A pea-sized amount of a fluoride toothpaste
should be used on the brush.

• Brush your child’s teeth twice a day.

• Ask us about the appropriate
fluoride level for your child.
